Wacky Races - speed, dust, rolls and crashes

What a brilliant 5 1/2 hours of fun we had yesterday afternoon. We all went along to the Norfolk Arena to see the "Wacky Races" which consisted of lots and lots of banger racing with TSR and 2L Bangers, Reliant Robins , chained pairs of bangers and a finale of bangers towing caravans in a mega destruction derby. We'd never been before and so weren't really sure what to expect, but we all came away having loved every minute of it, especially the Reliant races. We also didn't realise the event would last so long, in fact they put on extra races because of the huge crowds that turned up with many not reaching the turnstiles by race starting time. Traffic on the roads around the area were blocked solid, even a good two hours beforehand, and the main junction leading to the arena is also the junction people take to drive to Hunstanton (always a bank holiday destination), Sandringham (where there was a craft show) and Burnham Market (where there were horse trials), as well as all those other lovely Norfolk destinations along the way.

Chained pairs started off the event - great fun and by far the safest looking racing of the afternoon. Wouldn't mind having a bash at that myself. Several TSR and 2L bangers followed which were exciting, especially as so many had turned up unannounced - I think the commentator mentioned 70 (although was probably a slight exaggeration!). With so many cars racing at once the number of crashes to begin with were unavoidable - it was impossible to keep up with who was winning, although the skilled were able to.

Either TSR or 2L, not sure which. We had plenty of cars ending up like the one near the tyres with their rears wheels and back ends completely mangled. Tracters would tow them off after each race and then they'd reappear more or less as good as new a couple of races later!

Inbetween these races we had the joy of watching several 3 wheeled Reliant Robins doing their thing. Brilliant fun - we all enjoyed this the best as they roll and tumble, spin and crash at the slightest bend and knock. The drivers seem to relish in making their vehicles spin over and over, although for one poor chap it ended in him being stretchered off to hospital. Felt alittle sorry for the medical team constantly having to check on crashed victims, although we only witnessed one real casualty that afternoon.

Reliant Limo - it didn't last long and got dented and scratched within seconds of being on the race track.

This one was called "Bobbles" and appeared in all three Reliant races even though the actual cab was hanging on by a thread! The cab was attached to a tailer for the caravan destruction derby so I guess "Bobbles" has finished its racing life for good now.

One of the many Reliant pile-ups.

The final race was the destruction of towed caravans which took a while to take off I must say. Once one caravan began to show signs of falling apart, they all seem to go rather rapidly. I'm not surprised they left this race to last! The Robins left a good amount of debrise behind but the caravans left a huge amount!

New and clean banger and caravan ...

after a few laps it looked just a bit squashed ...

and eventually it seemed to attach itself to another car and trailer (which in itself happened to accidentally be towing another car and trailer!).

Brilliant - we shall definitely go again - to the Monster Truck racing next time I think.
